I'm looking for someone to develop a server based application that will generate redline comparisons for word documents. Initially the input will be two documents containing two word documents - version 1 and version 2 (in doc, docx, and rtf formats) and the expected output will be another word document (not in track changes) which will show the differences between the two input documents. Specifically additions will be formatted one way and deletions will be formatted in another. The output document needs to capture the same formatting and paragraph structure as one of the input documents. I can provide very specific examples of input documents and ideal output documents so you will have extremely concrete examples to test against.

This is not an easy project and I hope to find someone who has experience in at least one of the following areas: (1) end to end processing of word documents (including the proprietary word .doc format) (2) text comparison algorithm.

I am agnostic as to the language / code you use but given that this will be dealing with proprietary MS documents, it may be easier to work in .NET where you may have access to libraries to help you process proprietary formats. Parsing .doc files in php would not be fun.

The user interface will ultimately be web-based (some sort of drag and drop) and email-based (user sends the server two documents via email, gets the comparison document in the reply email).

I am proposing an initial milestone budget of $7000 if you can provide a working prototype that will process .doc (docx and rtf should be trivial if your prototype can handle .doc). We can negotiate this i you think this is an unreasonable given the time commitment. An additional $3000 will be paid when you provide a working prototype that can receive inputs via email and web interface. After that we can do additional work on your hourly rate.
